the hurdles of trying to join sudomemo

tuesday, may 13th 2025

whoa hoo boy i havent posted here in FOREVER. maybe i'll write a blog abt my life stuff some other time, but for now, i'd like to tell a fun little story: my unsuccessful journey of getting into sudomemo

i've been a flipnote animator for 7 years. that program means alot to me and i dont think i would be where i am without it. so naturally, this would mean i've been on sudomemo or something before, right? wrong. i've always been using the 3d version on an unmodded 3ds, which made posting on sudomemo (which required the dsi version of the app) impossible

but even with that in mind, the whole entire concept of sudomemo/flipnote hatena seemed cool to me. i was scared of modding my 3ds due to the risk of bricking it (sentimental value hohoho), so my plan was to get a dsi. but that never happened. i thought about just emulating the old flipnote studio, but back then (2020), i couldnt find any ways to do it. so i just buried the idea down and forgot about it, thinking emulation wouldn't be an option

fastforward to late december 2024, something compelled me to remember this idea as sometime earlier that year (or the one before? or even 2022?) i had found a post of someone bringing up the possibility of emulating flipnote studio on melonds. and in my head i ws like "oh boy this is IT". so a few days later (early january by then), i put my plan into fruition

it started really well at first. i managed to get the dsi menu to load and was able to download flipnote studio! then came the part of connecting to flipnote hatena... easy right? well yes, it was easy and i was able to get in, but there was a major problem: i couldn't make an account. i could only view and download other people's flipnotes, which, don't get me wrong, is a fun feature to use, but it still felt incomplete. i tried looking around for resources, only to discover that joining sudomemo via an emulator is AGAINST their terms of service. so i tried to find other neo-hatena servers. but none of them worked

after that came plan b: citra. i thought that maybe if i were to enter sudomemo via an emulated 3ds rather than a dsi, i would be able to get in. but i couldnt get citra to detect the app file. so here came another dead end. so i pushed this idea aside and just stopped caring about getting into sudomemo, until...

fast forward to today. as of writing this, i've been getting fascinated over old flipnotes and sudomemo more than usual. so naturally, i wanted to try joining it again. i tried through citra a little more, but still no results, not even an app detection. however, while i was looking at the 3ds hack guide, i noticed something: it was surprisingly easy and risk-free. and my 3ds is already 7 years old by now and no online services are even usable afaik (and even if they were, i'm not in contact with any of my 3ds friends anymore), so i thought i wouldn't have anything to lose modding the thing

to mod it, however, i had to take out its SD card. and the thing is, neither my computer nor my laptop have an SD card slot. the only device i knew who had one was my old laptop, however that one no longer boots up. before i even had the chance to discuss taking it to a repair store asap, i discovered my mom's work laptop had an SD card slot. so i was set, right? all i needed was for my dad to help me unscrew it

but guess what. the screws broke. my dad couldn't unscrew my 3ds. it will be stuck as an unmodded clean baby for the rest of its lifetime and god knows how i'll be able to remove that SD card. so here i am, hitting yet another dead end!

so... what now? i don't know. i'll probably just stick with the 3d flipnote studio and the melonds emulation and cope with the fact that i can't post on sudomemo, or just get a dsi... which was my initial plan to begin with. hopefully i can update this journey in the future, but for now, i'm stuck here. see you some other time
